WHY I TEACH

As an instructor I hope to facilitate the open exchange of ideas in class. To help make the content of my class accessible and comprehensible, I will integrate a multi-discipline view of concepts explored, using varied graphic media, music, and, when appropriate, riddles.

As a future art teacher, I will assess a student’s learning using whatever institutional or government guidelines I am obliged to follow. However, a more holistic approach, I believe, is needed. I would hope to see a student leave as an individual with an inquisitive mind, an empathetic regard for peers, a high regard for creative endeavor, a robust tolerance for ambiguity, and the empirical experience of facing challenges and reaching beyond the known.

Being an art teacher I feel is like getting in on the ground level to grown intellectually curious, respectful, emotionally literate human beings. With language we learn to speak, to listen, to read, and to write, and with art we learn to feel and express this core dimension of ourselves beyond language.

TESTIMONIALS

"

Dylan taught me to hold myself to a standard of excellence, and inspired me to seek out and take joy in challenges and is an innovative, inspiring, and committed educator. As one of his former students, I highly recommend him and I know that many more students will thrive under his mentorship as I have.

For the last twenty-five years I have watched Dylan create exquisite drawings, paintings, sculpture, music, a beautiful family and a long line of passionate students in his wake. He is a rare gem and any student would be lucky to access have such a multipledisciplined mentor.  He is that teacher who can guide a passionate student into a great artist.

Dylan is a wonderful and dedicated instructor. While I had many lessons and interactions with other instructors, Dylan left the biggest impact. His attention to detail and commitment to the students helped me excel as a musician and lead me to have wonderful opportunities.
